Leicester City are weighing up their next move as they search for a successor to Marti Cifuentes, with the club staring at the prospect of back-to-back relegations.

A six-point deduction has added to their troubles and four straight defeats have dragged the Foxes deeper into danger. With confidence low and time running short, the board face a major decision over who can steady the situation in the Championship.

Below, we assess the leading contenders to take charge at the King Power Stadium.

Gary Rowett

Gary Rowett has been linked with the vacancy and is thought to be under consideration, while also attracting interest from Blackburn Rovers.

Rowett was dismissed by Oxford United in December 2025 with the club sitting 22nd in the table. His record in the second tier remains strong, having managed several Championship sides across his career.

A former Leicester right-back, Rowett knows the club well and has built a reputation for setting teams up to be hard to beat at this level.

Ralph Hasenhuttl

Ralph Hasenhuttl has been out of work since leaving Wolfsburg in May 2025. He previously managed RB Leipzig and is best known in England for his four-year spell at Southampton.

The Austrian coach has often spoken warmly about his time in the Premier League and may welcome a return to English football. His high-energy approach could offer Leicester a new direction during a difficult campaign.

Russell Martin

Russell Martin is aiming to rebuild after a short stint at Rangers ended after 17 matches in October. His time at Southampton also concluded with relegation pressure mounting.

Despite those setbacks, Martin guided Southampton to promotion from the Championship through the play-offs. That achievement remains a key part of his managerial record and could appeal to Leicester’s hierarchy.

Andy King

First-team coach Andy King has stepped in on an interim basis while the club assess their options. His early results have not lifted the mood and he recently criticised the squad following defeat to Southampton.

King is still learning his trade in coaching, yet his standing at the club is strong. He made more than 350 appearances for Leicester and played a role in the 2015/16 Premier League title triumph.

Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard is another former Rangers boss who has been mentioned in connection with the job. He was previously close to a return to Ibrox before Danny Rohl’s appointment and has spoken about his desire to get back into management.

His experience in England came during his spell at Aston Villa. A move to the Championship may suit his current standing as he looks to re-establish himself in the dugout.

Leicester’s next appointment could shape the club’s immediate future, with survival in the second tier now the priority as they seek to halt a troubling slide.
